Skin Treatment - Microneedling Toronto
Your skin's natural healing and rejuvenating response can do everything from treating skin texture concerns like wrinkles, and acne scars to skin tone issues, hyperpigmentation, and more — all you have to do is know how to activate it safely.
Microneedling does just that, and it's suitable for every skin type, any time of year. Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries to the skin to promote healing and kickstart new elastin and collagen production, resulting in firmer, smoother, and youthful-looking skin.
Microneedling Treatment Toronto
At Facet Dermatology in Toronto, we use the Eclipse MicroPen® Elite to effectively treat most areas of the body, including the face, neck, décolleté, abdomen, arms, and hands, with minimal downtime and natural-looking results.
How does microneedling work?
Also called collagen induction therapy, microneedling uses fine needles to create micro-injuries to the top layer of the skin, which triggers your body's natural healing process. As the device treats the skin, its tiny needles create hundreds of superficial micro-channels every few seconds, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin in a deeper level of the skin to help you recover. As your skin heals, it becomes smoother and firmer, improving texture concerns like acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles. This heightened cellular turnover also helps your skin's tone become more even and bright, with less noticeable dark spots, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation, creating the look of healthier skin.
An added bonus of microneedling treatment is that the tiny punctures create channels in the skin, which significantly increases product absorption — meaning that after a microneedling session, your skincare products will be more effective than ever before.
Some microneedling treatments, including Eclipse MicroPen offered at Facet Dermatology, incorporate radiofrequency energy into the procedure. The fine needles help direct this energy into the lower levels of the skin, stimulating new collagen production even more effectively than traditional microneedling. This means more dramatic improvement to visible signs of aging, including fine lines, wrinkles, and enlarged pores.

Is microneedling safe?
Microneedling is approved by both the FDA and Health Canada and considered extremely safe if you’re a good candidate and treated by a skilled provider. The Eclipse MicroPen Elite uses sterile, single-use surgical grade cartridge tips in order to maintain the highest level of safety.
Though the treatment uses fine needles, collagen induction therapy is typically well tolerated. Many patients find microneedling treatment to be perfectly comfortable. Some have said that it can feel similar to sandpaper gliding on the skin, or they can sense that a "stamping" action is taking place on their skin, but cannot feel the actual needles. Depending on how deep the tiny needles will be going into your skin and your tolerance for discomfort, your provider may apply topical numbing cream. Numbing cream can take up to half an hour to take effect, so keep in mind that that this step could increase your overall treatment time.
How many microneedling treatments are needed?
Although you’ll likely see noticeable results after just one treatment, the full benefits of microneedling are best achieved with an ongoing series of treatments. Your medical aesthetician will work with you to develop a treatment plan suited to your needs — how many treatments you need will be determined by the specific skin concerns you're hoping to address.
One of the best ways to make the most out of your appointments is by combining microneedling with other treatments, such as platelet-rich plasma therapy or powerful skincare products, such as professional chemical peels or a potent hyaluronic acid serum. Because of the tiny punctures created by the micro needles, skin is more receptive to topical treatments. When you use these options in conjunction with collagen induction therapy, you'll see a more dramatic improvement to your skin.
Which areas can be treated with collagen induction therapy?
The wonderful thing about microneedling treatments is that they can be used on the body to improve skin texture and tone. Most frequently, microneedling is performed on the face, neck, and chest, but many patients use it for tightening loose skin and improving the appearance of stretch marks on the arms, legs, and abdomen.
Is microneedling right for you?
Suitable for all skin types, any time of the year, microneedling is an effective solution for men and women of all ages looking for a treatment for skin tone and texture, wrinkles, scars, or hyperpigmentation. Microneedling cannot be performed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you tend to develop hypertrophic scarring or keloids. However, unlike many aesthetic treatments, microneedling treatments are safe for those with darker skin tones.

Frequently asked questions about microneedling
Before your microneedling appointment, you should discontinue use of any blood-thinning medications (including aspirin and fish oil supplements) under the guidance of your primary care physician; blood thinners, as well as alcohol, can increase your risk of bruising from the treatment.
Beyond tweezing and shaving, you should avoid hair removal — including waxing, electrolysis, and laser hair removal — the week before your appointment, and do not shave the day of your microneedling treatment. This will all help you avoid the risk of irritation.
Other treatments that could irritate your skin ahead of microneedling include at-home or professional chemical peels, facial scrubs, microdermabrasion, retinoids, and heat-based professional treatments. These should all be avoided for at least two weeks before your collagen induction therapy procedure.
UV damage caused by tanning or sunburn in the week before your appointment will increase your risk of irritation and sensitivity. Be sure to wear SPF 30 daily to protect your skin from the sun.
If you are prone to cold sores, take antiviral medication as directed by your physician in the days leading up to your microneedling treatment; if you experience a cold sore, you will not be able to be treated.
Finally, you should come to your collagen induction therapy appointment with clean, bare skin that's free of makeup.
Following your microneedling treatment, you’ll notice an immediate glow to your skin, with additional changes developing over the course of several weeks. Results can continue to improve for up to six months after treatment.
After your microneedling treatment, you may experience some redness, swelling, tingling, or tightness, which should subside within a few days. You should be able to return to most day-to-day activities immediately.
The most common side effects of collagen induction therapy include bruising, swelling, and irritation. In rare cases, the tiny punctures could cause infection or scarring. During your consultation, your provider will be able to provide personalized information regarding your unique concerns and goals for microneedling treatment.
