What is an Excel V laser treatment?
Excel V is a YAG laser that uses two laser wavelengths to target superficial benign pigmented lesions, like brown spots or port wine stains, as well as red or brown discoloration beneath the skin's surface, such as diffuse redness, broken blood vessels, or a vascular lesion. Potent pulses of light energy created by this laser treatment causes blood vessels to coagulate, which results in them being absorbed by the body. This also causes dark spots and related sun damage to crust up and slough off.
Excel V laser treatment is unique in that it can not only treat larger areas, but also zero in on very small, precise areas (such as a tiny cherry angioma or broken blood vessel) for targeted treatment. The same device can also be used to perform a Laser Genesis procedure, which can treat some of the same concerns as well as stimulate new collagen production to shrink the look of large pores, smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and reduce the appearance of acne scars, including pitted scars.
Excel V is basically like two lasers in one. Treatment is incredibly customizable and varied to address a wide range of patient concerns and needs. This has caused many providers to replace the pulsed dye laser of yesteryear with the more modern Excel V YAG laser, making it a go-to laser for skin revitalization. Is Excel V Laser treatment safe?
Yes, in the hands of a skilled practitioner, Excel V is very safe. This device has been cleared by Health Canada and offers minimal side effects. Because of the unique CoolView handpiece, a cooling system that keeps skin comfortable during treatment, most patients require no numbing cream or any other topical anesthetic. Patients describe the sensation of these cosmetic procedures to be similar to a rubber band snapping the surface of the skin.
Am I a good candidate for Excel V laser treatment?
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your skin due to red or brown discoloration, such as broken capillaries caused by rosacea or sun damage-related age spots, you may be a candidate. Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or undergoing skin cancer treatment do not qualify for treatment with Excel V laser.
Because the laser works by seeking out and destroying abnormal pigment, you should avoid suntanning or using self-tanner in the weeks leading up to your Excel V treatment. It is safe for most skin types, but patients with deeper skin tones may be at risk for hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. Recovery and Results
Not only is a laser treatment using Excel V quite quick (usually only about 20 minutes!), the downtime is minimal. Post procedure, most patients can immediately return to normal activities, as well as apply makeup.
Depending on the strength of your treatment and the concern your provider is treating (like more stubborn vessels), you may experience side effects like swelling. When addressing smaller areas, swelling might be especially noticeable. Depending on your unique circumstance, your provider may suggest using a topical steroid to help reduce inflammation.
Another potential side effect from a more potent treatment is bruising. In some cases, bruising can last for several weeks. Because this laser treatment doesn't break the skin, you can safely apply makeup to the treated area, but if you are concerned about this possible side effect, discuss it with your Facet Dermatology provider during your consultation.
Unlike other treatments used for vascular lesions, such as pulsed dye laser, Excel V can fully correct the appearance of these common skin concerns with just one or two treatments. Keep in mind that individual results will vary; some issues may take more treatments to resolve. Your provider will be able to determine how many treatments you'll require during your consultation.
More superficial concerns may be visibly improved in just one week. More often, however, you'll see the outcome of an Excel V treatment session within two to six weeks. For deeper issues, it may take up to a few months to see your final results, though you'll likely see significant improvement throughout that window of time.
You may not see permanent results from Excel V laser treatment. To maintain the outcome and stave off facial redness, consider booking a maintenance appointment approximately three years after your initial course of treatment.
